How to read the results

(1)

Pixels, not characters

Search results truncate by width, not character count. A title full of Ws gets cut much sooner than one full of Is, so we measure the actual rendered width.

(2)

Front-load what matters

If a title is cut off, the end disappears. Put your main service and location first and your brand name last.

(3)

Write for the click

Rankings get you seen; the title and description get you chosen. Say who it's for, what they get and why now.

(4)

Match the search

Words that match the search are often shown in bold. Using your target phrase naturally helps your result stand out.

(5)

Descriptions can be rewritten

Search engines sometimes swap in other text from your page. A clear, relevant description makes that less likely.

(6)

Approximate by design

Exact limits shift between devices and updates. Treat the meters as a guide and leave a little room to spare.

Common questions

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for roughly 50–60 characters, but what really matters is width: around 600 pixels on desktop. This tool measures the width for you.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 120–155 characters usually displays in full on desktop. On mobile, less is shown, so put the most important message first.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly. But a compelling description can increase how many people click your result, which is the whole point of ranking.
